What is a virus?

That's a good question. A computer virus is a program for the computer that is destructive, or designed to gather un-authorised information, or somehow impair the computers integrity. Viruses are malicious in nature and intent. Viruses are often spread by other (virus infected) computers. The number of known viruses is greater than 60,000.

How a virus is spread.

These days viruses are typically spread through un-protected internet connections and may arrive through email, instant messenger, peer to peer file shares, network shares and many other (internet connected) means.

DO you need a BETTER virus protection than you're currently using?

What is anti virus software?

Anti virus software is a program that detects and removes a virus from a computer. Many anti virus programs use a method of detection called scanning, where on a regular interval, or when the computer is started a check is made that there are no known viruses on the computer. There are better, more intuitive methods of detecting viruses than simple scanning.

Nod32 works on the basis of "if it looks and feels like a virus" then we'll call it a virus and treat it as such.

Why would I need antivirus software on my computer?

Occasionally we find a customer with no anti virus software at all. They may have been fine for years, but one day they get caught by a virus and the effect and cost is higher than if they'd had proper protection for the last 2 years.

Protect against loss of privacy and computer data.

You need antivirus software on your computer to guard against the known and the un-known computer threats, viruses and spyware, now and in the future.

Anti virus and anti spyware software is like insurance.

Paying the premium (for the insurance) gives you peace of mind. Hopefully you don't ever need to claim on the insurance, but if you did, at least you'd have some better result than a total loss of property.

Not all antivirus programs are the same

There's an enormous difference in the way anti virus programs work and in the virus detection effectiveness. That's part of the reason why Pixel ITT use, recommend and sell eset's nod32 anti virus system, because since late 2002 we've found it to be the most effective reliable and the fastest virus detection system we've come across.

What is spyware?

Spyware is similar to a virus, but the intention of spyware producers is very different. Spyware aims to gather and harness information you enter into web connected services to steal your information, identity or money. Other aims of spyware is to alter your use if the internet services to present their view or web information instead of genuine information and service providers' sites.

These days (2006) there's very little differentiation between a virus and spyware as the difference may only be in interpretation of the severity of the malicious effect.

Do I need to worry about spyware?

Many people use free spyware detection and removal programs. On a regular basis (when they remember), they update the detection program and scan for spyware. Many of the free programs are reputable, being created and maintained by very generous individuals who would like the internet to be a safe place for them and for you.

Unfortunately, today, there's other spyware scanners that are simply spyware themselves. They arrive as a pop-up on your (or your child's) desktop and boldly state that your computer is infected with viruses and spyware. They boldly state that this free program, which, remember arrived un-solicited on your desktop, will eliminate and prevent any further problems. WAIT on. Ask yourself. Where did this come from? Why is it free? Is this real?

Wise customers kill their internet connection and ask for help.

Paid for, proper, real spyware detection / prevention programs need development labs and staff to manage the continual churning and changing of the internet security business.

Catching the viruses the other anti virus programs miss!

Surprisingly, nod32 often detects active viruses on our clients' computers when they have had current virus protection from a competing anti virus company's product that obviously hasn't been as well as the customer had expected. After NOD32 has shown how quickly and effectively it operates the client buys nod32 and never looks back. Any viruses that are received are given short shrift indeed.
