PC Directions, January 2009

Where's your technology compass pointing this year?

Learning direction

Windows - how it is

  • Windows Vista
    • Windows Vista has been out for about 2 years now
    • Our experience is there seem to be far less troubles for users
      • particularly with viruses and spyware
        • hence there’s much less need for computer technical support with Windows Vista due to its Security Aware design
        • Windows Vista is the normal Windows OS sold through retail outlets in Australia
  • Windows 7
    • Is planned to replace Vista (and XP) in 2009
    • Ought to improve the PC performance on Windows Vista
  • Microsoft Windows XP Support

Windows Vista Ultimate on a Media Center PC - experiential learning (adult learning?)

  • We particularly use this Vista Ultimate PC for TV viewing

Windows Home Server

What else is on the Horizon?
Emerging technology, trends, threats in 2009?

  • Netbooks
    • Low cost notebook style PC's that connect to the home / school network by wireless networking
    • Are becoming more popular
    • for travelling or use in the office

  • Virtual PC World
    • three main companies are providing Virtual PC's and Servers
      • to host older operating systems within one PC or server
      • and reduce running and maintenance costs for PC systems (1 pc in place of many)
      • the Companies are

  • Saas
    • Software as a service
      • in other words rather than having many applications or programs on your PC and you paying licensing costs for each of them you may pay no fee or a low fee and access effectively the same programs on-line (through the internet) from whereever you are, whether you're in the office, at home or maybe on-site with a client.
        • Such as Google Apps
        • ZOHO, Harvest and other online apps

  • Keeping the PC up to date (Patching and security)
In these times when there seems to be threats arriving by email and just landing on your computer because you happened across some dodgy website it's super important to keep your PC software up to date with it's security. Here's a few links

  • PC and AV Cabling
    • There must be a better smart way to organise the cables needed to connect
      • a media center PC,
      • TV, HDTV,
      • DVD player,
      • Video cassette (VCR) recorder,
      • PVR
      • STB - small set top box for digital TV reception
      • Satellite TV Receiver
      • Other input / output devices for home entertainment
  • What I'd like is an AV style mixer box that's operated by a windows media center remote control got a suggestion - like to tell Greg at Pixel  ITT
