What is anti virus?
In people, viruses, bacteria and the common cold
are easily caught by being with other people, on crowded transpost,
or sometime it just happens.
Small malicious program
In computers a virus is some small malicious
program that has been received by your computer, often from the
internet and as it's a program it follows it's makers instructions
to perform some malicious (bad) work in your computer. They often
have instructions to find as many other computers where they can
continue their nasty work.
Reduce virus impact
Anti virus software is designed to reduce,
hopefully to zero, the chance that your computer will be affected by
such a malicious program.
Award winning antivirus (Nod32)
Pixel ITT promote eset's NOD32 antivirus as it has
a history of detecting and preventing the action of new, so called
'in the wild' viruses, that many other antivirus companies are just
starting to receive reports from their customers of the destruction
and havoc spread by the new virus.
Keep it current
Of course, as the field of viruses and computer
programs are changing continually, having an antivirus that's one
month or two year out of date is a useless protection. It only makes
you feel good that you've saved your money, until there's a big
computer repair bill and you have to buy the anti virus program
anyway. In other words -- keep it up to date, always --.

What is a firewall
Imaging, you're a King
in the middle ages, and there's hostile tribes and warlords in the
surrounding districts. So you build a fort to protect your kingdom,
your army and the people who are your subjects.
Hard and
tough
They're as hard as stone and they're
impregnegable. Of course, you, your army and your subjects need to
be able to farm the fields when the surrounding warlords are not
waging war. So you need doors for access to the farmland and small
windows to see out.
Perimeter security or more advanced
A traditional firewall is like the walls of the
fort. You put it at the edge of your computer network to deter
invaders and to stop the occupants wandering out into the danger
zone. Except when you allow it, of course.
Firewall's need to
be on the inside, as well as the perimeter.
Using the fort analogy, though, if a dangerous enemy gets within the
fort, the stone walls are no longer any use to you.
Acclaimed Agnitum Outpost Firewall Program
Modern firewalls, Agnitum's Outpost Firewall Pro and Network
Security, for example, include many new features that make them not
just the walls around your subjects, but able to stop any enemy
within.
Is simple firewall, perimeter protection enough?
One emerging problem, in 2006, is traditional
firewalls daily being breached by wireless enabled notebooks with no
security configured, being connected to business networks, giving
access to anyone on the other side of the firewall free access
within the business.
Stranger danger on the inside
Another security issue is after someone opens
security to share music or chat and unwittingly allows unwelcome
visitors come inside your computer.
So, No, simply protecting
the perimeter is not enough these days!

What other protection is available?
In the analogies again, there are programs for your
computer that act like the police in today's modern society. They
check problems of access, new programs that start up, attempts to
access the computer, whether the user is allowed to perform system
changes etc.
What's it called?
Outpost Security
Suite, released in May 2007, provides advanced
host protection to protect your computer against unknown threats,
that may be malicious, though they have not been categorised by
security experts.
What is HIPS in computer terms
HIPS-class products are necessary for
complex protection as well as traditional antivirus software,
personal firewalls and anti-spam providing protection against
threats immune to traditional IT security solutions.

Why worry about
the odd spam email?
IS UCE (Un-solicited Commercial
Email) clogging up your email system so you miss important meetings
and can't find what's important to you?

Backup, Backup, Backup.
When would I need to
retrieve data from a backup
Yesterday a client called to ask if
restoring his (brand name) computer to it's original condition -
He'd just used a System Recovery Procedure - caused his files to be
erased?
Sorry Yes, it did effectively erase
your files.
Do you have a Backup?
No was his answer. Sorry, then it's
probably (most likely to be) gone.
It all happened to easily, and I
suppose he didn't read the warnings properly or understand the
warnings.
If he'd call an hour earlier it would have been a
much happier story.
Of course we should have a current
backup. Of course I meant to do a backup. Of course I was always too
busy. But now it's gone. Repent at leisure. Sorry.
