What is a firewall?

In a car or motor vehicle, a firewall is the barrier between the engine compartment and people in the car. It's made of steel and has very few holes or openings through it.

Naturally, there's some controls, electrics and signal systems that need to be passed between the passenger and the engine compartments.

The engine bay is a relatively dangerous place with fuel, battery acid, a hot engine, pipes, hoses and a myriad other components to make it all work.

If a fire were to break out in the engine bay the passengers inside the car need to be kept safe until the vehicle can be stopped and evacuated.

If the passengers all escape un-harmed, then the firewall has done it's job.

A computer firewall provides similar protection between the "wild west" nature of the internet and the relatively safe environment of the home or business data inside the computer (and naturally the computer users).

Firewall software by Agnitum.

Outpost Firewall Network Security 2.0 includes the proactive anti-spyware defences and information theft protection introduced in Outpost Firewall Pro 3.0 in September last year, as well as significantly improved central administration controls. The core client firewall has also been reinforced and rendered more flexible to better defend network endpoints against intrusion.

An even tougher firewall

Incorporating the award-winning Outpost Firewall Pro 3.5 engine, Outpost Firewall Network Security delivers high performance yet easy-to-use protection against known and unknown network attacks.

The release of Outpost Firewall Network Security is scheduled for the beginning of March. Registered users of Outpost Office Firewall will be able to upgrade to Outpost Firewall Network Security free of charge as part of their current maintenance subscription.

Why worry about a firewall?

Being online is fraught with dangers: Internet worms, spyware agents, Trojan horses, hijackers and more can wreak havoc, causing anything from slow performance to system crashes to full-blown identity theft. And to provide you with the kind of protection you need in these days of cyber thieves and online extortionists, your firewall must be able to monitor all inbound and outbound traffic and protect you from any unauthorized intrusion by rendering your PC invisible to anything that you haven’t authorized to see it.

Outpost Firewall Network Security 2.0 Benefits

Network anti-spyware

By adding a powerful anti-spyware module that combines proactive monitoring and an on-demand scanner, Outpost Firewall now reliably protects client PCs against spyware. Any spyware that gets onto a client – such as a salesperson’s laptop – is effectively contained. It is prevented from phoning home confidential corporate data when the laptop is reconnected to the network and from hopping across network connections to infect other clients. No spyware also minimizes the number of popup ads and other temptations faced by users when they’re on the web, so you’ll also benefit from improved productivity. Proactive spyware monitoring protects the integrity of corporate assets and reduces helpdesk calls, making a positive contribution to the bottom line.

Targeted information protection

Another benefit of Outpost Firewall Network Security 2.0 is targeted information protection. Simply identify blocks of text or character strings (such as passwords, confidential financial information, or employee identification information) and that data is prevented from ever leaving the network.

Group policies to manage desktops

The addition of group policy support gives administrators extra flexibility in managing their endpoints by assigning specific configurations to selected user groups. This enables IT to designate customized network access policies for specific groups depending on risk and exposure levels – for example, sales laptops will likely require stricter protection than accounting’s desktops.

Outpost Office Firewall Benefits

Outpost Office Firewall proactively protects your organization from Internet dangers and computer sabotage originating internally, maintaining high employee efficiency and ensuring safety compliance across every connected desktop within your organization.

Your computer network is robustly protected from the latest Internet dangers, mal-ware propagation, unsolicited program activity on employee desktops and contradictory Web surfing practices. Office Firewall includes a powerful Intrusion Detection System, application-level filtering and Stateful Packet Inspection, features that provide all necessary protection against the latest hacker attacks and mal-ware scourges.

Other Outpost Office Firewall Program Benefits

Effortless Deployment

With the Centralized Deployment feature, IT personnel can easily roll out client firewall software to all or selected workstations within the organization, expediting installation and controlling remote clients from a single administrator’s console.

Control over Endpoints

The Client Configuration Editor lets you easily create and edit individual clients’ firewall configurations using the familiar Outpost Firewall interface. At any time, administrators can override user modifications of client firewall software to accommodate the latest changes in corporate security policy.

Fast and Easy Updates

Agnitum Update Service lets you download a single, multi-deployable Client Firewall update package and install it across multiple client desktops. This function cuts down on bandwidth and administrator time.
