The Best Antivirus Product of 2007: Eset's Nod32 2.7
"--
Nod32's Shining Flip Side --
What's good about Nod32 grows on you the more you use it, though. I
have it running on four computers, and I've come to greatly admire
it and trust it implicitly ...
... There's no doubt in my mind that in 2007, Nod32 is the very best lightweight antivirus/anti-malware product you can buy for Windows XP, Vista, or Linux/BSD. My decision to crown it the Best Antivirus Product of 2007 came without hesitation -- even for Eudora users. No, it's not perfect. But it's clearly your best choice." read the complete article

14/9/2006, Excerpt from Scot's Newsletter by Scot Finnie on Nod32 Antivirus
"...
3. DON'T FORGET NOD32. It seems to me that many people overlooked my recommendation of Eset's Nod32 as the second-best antivirus product in 2006. If you've read the entire series, you know that I went to great pains to detail my concerns about Nod32 2.5. I did that because I truly admire and trust the protective qualities of this little-known antivirus product. ..."

6/1/2006, Update from Microsoft for Graphics Rendering Engine.
Microsoft have released a critical update through the Windows Automatic Update system (Security Update for Windows XP (KB912919)) to patch Windows XP for this WMF Vulnerability mentioned below. (link to MS for info)

4/1/2006, Update on WMF Vulnerability and patch for users of other anti virus software products.
Paolo Monti (NOD32 Italy) has released a new comprehensive patch to block all known (at time of writing) variants of the Windows WMF exploit ... download it from: Nod32 download page.
More information and instructions are available in the pixel itt download zone
This patch is for customers not using a current and up to date version of nod32 anti virus software.
Ask Greg about changing to a better anti virus than your current possibly susceptible product.
1/1/2006, Protection from new WMF Vulnerability.
Information for users of Nod32.
NOD32 users are protected against the new WMF Vulnerability as long as they have the latest virus definitions installed. Australian distributor of NOD32, Antivirus Australia, recommends users who do not have updates scheduled for hourly, every hour, change their settings so their pc is at the latest available protection level at all times. Eset, makers of NOD Antivirus provide updates on a 24 by 7 basis. When virus out breaks occur eset provide multiple updates every day. Updates are usually made every two days at a minimum.
Check your update schedule or call Pixel ITT for help.
Information for pc users with other antivirus software.
Computer
users who are using other antivirus software
may not be protected against some or all variants at time of
writing. Customers may request
(free tool for WMF Vulnerability blocking)
a tool (from Paolo Monti, NOD32 Italy) to modify the registry and
block the four currently-known exploits. It works silently, and
displays a message in case of error only.
Pixel ITT will email you the
latest version of the tool available.
NOTE:
Keep in mind that new variants are invariably
coded to avoid the detection routines used to catch previous
variants. What works this morning may not protect you against this
afternoon's exploit.

Another Great Review of NOD32
"They've thought of everything when building the best anti virus protection program available. The only thing this product doesn't have going for it right now is name recognition, but a little time can easily change that."
30/7/2005, NOD32 64-bit version press release.
Hoping to capitalise on the gap in anti virus products, San Diego-based Eset on Tuesday released a version of its NOD32 software for 64-bit systems. Eset's software is able to determine whether it's being used in 32-bit or 64-bit mode and both types of systems can be managed by a single piece of management software, called the NOD32 Remote Administrator. "The 64-bit support that we provide is pretty much seamless to the user," said Andi Lee, Eset's chief technology officer.
3/6/2005, Retrospective Anti virus Program Test.
Comparatives.org has just released its latest anti virus product test results.
This is a radical departure from the usual "Current Anti virus Programs vs Current In The Wild Viruses" comparatives ... the AV programs had not been updated for three months and were tested against a wide range of old and new viruses, backdoors, Trojans, and other assorted malware.
The results of retrospectively testing three-months-old anti virus programs against current viruses are arguably pretty useless to anyone who keeps their AV up-to-date, but retro testing is the "crystal ball" of the anti virus world. It gives us a good indication of a product's proactive capabilities ... its ability to "see into the future" and protect against viruses which haven't even been written yet.
Of the 51 new In The Wild viruses used in the test, NOD32 heuristics detected and blocked 46 (90%) as unknown viruses. The #2 rated program came in well behind, with only 35 viruses (69%) detected. Most of the "big name" anti virus programs detected 10 viruses or less, and a couple didn't detect any viruses at all.
NOD32 v2.12, with an overall score of 70%, was the outright winner by a substantial margin. 70% might sound a bit mediocre for a program with 32 VB100% Awards to its credit ... but when you consider that the 12 other programs tested managed overall scores from a low of only 4% to a maximum of 49% for the #2 rated program, that 70% puts NOD32 so far out in front that the others will never catch up! (v2.5 has even more powerful heuristics than v2.12, which would have put today's NOD32 even further ahead.)
For some time the lack of credible tests of anti virus products against the broader spectrum of non-viral malware has allowed self-appointed "virus experts" and amateur testers with dubious credentials to get away with preaching that NOD32, even though rated as the world's #1 virus detector in Virus Bulletin laboratory tests, performed poorly in the real world against non-viral threats.
Now those wannabe "virus experts" and shonky testers can eat their words! In addition to sweeping the floor with the opposition in new virus detection, NOD32 beat every other anti virus program in the world in Trojan, backdoor, and non-viral malware detection in av-comparatives.org's test by a country mile!
If it's not NOD32 it's just another scanner!
Test results can be viewed on: av-comparatives.org

28/5/2005, Award in Virus Bulletin's June 2005 test.
NOD32 has been awarded its 32nd VB100% Award in Virus Bulletin's June 2005 test on the Windows XP platform.
NOD32 has never missed an In The Wild virus in a Virus Bulletin test since it was first tested in May 1998 ... that's 7 years of 100% ITW virus detection! No other anti virus program in the world comes close to this figure!
We don't claim that NOD32 will detect 100% of viruses 100% of the time, but it WILL put you closer to 100% detection than any other anti virus program!
